How to treat bumps and bruises....

Last Saturday night we were with some friends at the park.... (Let me just stick in my two cents or little pet peeve about the park- I don't like to take my kids to the park!!! Why you ask?? Without fail every time we go to the park even if they have just gone to the bathroom they have to go again. And for some reason the parks here in Arizona do not have bathrooms, and if they do I am taking someone every five seconds!! Then on top of that, they don't play. They have to come sit by me and talk to me?? I know I know- I really should enjoy this part of the experience with kids, but we are here for them to play not talk. There thats my pet peeve, anybody else hate taking their kids to the park??)
Back to the story about Jane...
My little Jane came to me crying, she had fallen and bumped her head.

This is her story with some tears mixed in of course. Someone had pushed her and her head had bumped into the stairs.  My mother-in-law had given me some advice long ago about a homeopathic medicine named "arnica." Its true name is arnica montana.  My mother-in-law had 11 children.
7 of them boys!!! My husband is 8 of 11 children. She has 58+ grandchildren. An amazing woman!!  She has used Homeopathic medicine with all of her children, and even her grandchildren. Anyways here was her advice: carry "arnica" with you in your purse!

Have one in your home medicine cabinet, have one in your first aid kit, take it camping with you, etc.
I have followed her advice. This is what "arnica" does. It reduces trauma. It helps muscle aches and stiffness. Swelling from injuries. Discoloration from bruising. Here is a great article from DrLuc about "arnica" please take the time to read it. It gives a basic explanation of Homeopathic medicines, including "arnica". This article here also gives a great description of "arnica".

"Arnica" is a great absorber of blood.  If you bump your head the swelling and bruising goes down. This is my sweet Jane just after she hit her head. I gave her "arnica" immediately following her accident. Notice the big bump??

I watched Jane very closely the rest of the night. Because I did not see it happen and I am not sure how hurt she really was, I took the head injury very serious. But, I also knew that the "arnica" would really help her. She did fine the rest of the night.

Here is a picture of her eye 4 days later. The big bruise was gone by that night. Her eye just barely started to show discoloration. This is not bad at all. At least I didn't have to take her to the ER.

Arnica can be purchased at most health food stores. I got mine at Sprouts.

Please read the directions carefully!!
Adults/children dissolve 5 pellets in the mouth 3 times a day until symptoms are relieved or as directed by a doctor.  (According to DrLuc you should take them with water. My mother-in-law taught us to only allow water right after the injury. Wait about 15 minutes and then they can eat again.)
Stop use and ask a doctor if symptoms persist for more than 3 days or worsen.

** If you have other medical conditions please check with your doctor.**
I am not a doctor, and this is just my opinion. But as you can see, I have "arnica" on me at all times and have used it so many circumstances.
You can also buy it in a cream form for sport injuries.

Despite my pet peeve about the park, I am sure we will be going back! I am a mom with 4 kids. Kids fall down, they get hurt. I use "arnica". I take them to the bathroom a thousand times at the park. I eventually leave the park, because they are tired of talking to me, He He.
So... I ask you, What is in your purse??

  1. As a mother of a diabetic child, I am always in search of better treatment methods for my daughter. Diabetic wounds heal much slower than those without the condition. So far I have found products such as medihoney wound dressings. They have been very helpful in her wound healing process. I haven't actually heard of Arnica before but I will definitely give this a try as well. Thank you!
