Can you describe what Red Velvet Cake tastes like??
I can't.
But I do know that it is very very delicious!
A piece of red velvet cake in my eyes is heaven!! The chocolately goodness and the cream cheese frosting. Heaven in my eyes!
These Red Velvet Rice Krispie Treats are the most beautiful RED velvet rice krispie treats that have hit my kitchen.
When I decided to make these treats... I was a little concerned about the coloring. The package of dry powder was brownish looking. I was worried my coloring for these delicious treats would be off. But... to my surprise they came out looking a very beautiful red !! This is not food coloring... it is a cake mix!
Here is the recipe:
Red Velvet Rice Krispie Treats
*adapted from Six Sisters Stuff
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 (10 oz) bag of marshmallows
- 6 cups rice krispie cereal
- ⅓ cup Duncun Hines Red Velvet Cake Mix (dry powder)
- optional sprinkles
Directions:
Prepare a 9x13 pan by spraying it with cooking spray.
Melt the butter and marshmallows in a large pan over low heat. When the marshmallows are completely melted, add the cake mix powder. Mix. Add rice krispie cereal and mix until completely coated with the marshmallow mixture. (watch it turn into a beautiful red color)
Spoon into prepared pan. With a spoon sprayed with cooking spray, level out the cereal. Let it sit for about 30 minutes before cutting.
*I know 1/4 cup butter seems like a lot, but I have made these treats a thousand times and our family seems to like the gooey treats better. This makes them so much gooier.
When was the last time you made rice krispie treats??
Maybe next you can throw in some cake mix... and make them red beautiful!!
Now... I gave them to my kids to taste test. They liked them.... but they had no idea that there was cake mix in them. They didn't even know what red velvet cake was!

Now... I am not going to lie. I can't describe what red velvet cakes tastes like... and these taste more like rice krispie treats than red velvet cake... but they sure are a beautiful red.
The other night I was out to dinner with my mother and she tasted the red velvet cake that we had at Liberty Market, and asked what it tasted like too?
Isn't that funny?
I don't think anybody can describe the taste.
After doing some research... I don't think any red velvet rice krispies taste like the original... red velvet cake. You may just have to have a piece of red velvet cake if you want the overall taste!
But... if you want some beautiful red rice krispie treats... give these a try.
