I have been a mom for almost 11 years and this has NEVER happened to me! A CRAYON IN MY DRYER!! I was going about my morning, making and packing the girls lunches. I went to get my daughter Jane's backpack and it was soaking wet! Her water bottle had leaked and apparently had been wet from the day before. Her homework folders were soaked and ruined! YES, she will be able to use this as an excuse, NO homework, at least until her teacher sends her new homework home, He He. I think you get the picture. I checked all of the pockets in the backpack and decided to throw it into the dryer to be dry for school. I KNOW THAT I HAD CHECKED HER POCKETS!!! Somehow there was a GREEN crayon in one of her side pockets.
I usually don't check pockets and have been very lucky that I haven't run into this problem before. BUT as a mom at sometime in our lives we will experience this. TODAY was my day to experience it. I didn't want to clean it right away and so I walked away from it and then later this afternoon I realized I needed some laundry done. Then I did what most mom's do when they need help, they call people who have actually experienced it to see what worked for them!!! I texted my sister and my sister-in-law and they told me to use WD40.
I decided to google it and I found several blogs that had suggestions. YES, I LOVE TO GO TO BLOGS FOR ADVICE!. I found this advice at mommywithselectivememory.com and this blog ThriftyFun had several comments. As I was reading through the comments someone mentioned toothpaste. YES THATS RIGHT-TOOTHPASTE. I really didn't want to use WD40 and so I thought I will try this.
In the advice they mentioned Colgate Whitening toothpaste. I didn't have any of that, I use Aquafresh. The toothpaste I had was a whitening one and so I thought here we go! Let's Do This!! I grabbed some old towels and some water. I just put a dab onto my towel and then sprayed it with lots of water. I had read in the advice to warm up the dryer so the crayons are melted a little. I did this too!
IT WORKED!! IT ACTUALLY WORKED!!
Let me tell you what I learned from this:1. You will have to scrub a little bit. It is inevitable!!
2. Grab a pillow for your knees. You will be inside the dryer for a while.
3. Don't be afraid to use lots of toothpaste. I used several towels and lots of toothpaste especially on the darker parts.
4. Heat the dryer up again and again, so that you can remove the melted crayon, and this also accomplishes the movement of the dryer so that you can clean all around the inside at different levels.
5. Don't curse your children because of the crayon. It was my fault, and I was soooooo lucky that this worked and with some hard, yet easy work, the GREEN crayon, came out of the dryer, YEA!!
6. Dry some old clothes first just in case the crayon somehow magically appears.
A *MINTY* clean dryer!
When your day comes that you find a crayon in your laundry/dryer grab a tube of toothpaste and get to work! I am so glad this worked for me and hope it works for you too!
